The aim of this bootcamp session is to introduce Google Refine and to show how it can be used to explore humanities datasets. Refine is a powerful free tool for exploring, normalising and cleaning up datasets. In this session we’ll work through the various features of Refine, including importing data, faceting, clustering, and calling into remote APIs, by working on a fictional but plausible research project. We’ll start with a research question in mind and use the features of Refine to gain insights and find answers. All welcome.
Note that while this session will cover how to install Google Refine, to get the most out of the time available it’d good if you could pre-install it on your laptop.
The session will be presented by Luc Small (Intersect) and Richard Lehane (State Records NSW).
